I wanted to wish everyone a Happy and Healthy holiday season.  With all the craziness going on, it is still nice to relish in the “creativity” of our fellow Man/Woman.  As I am driving down the road, ironically not far from where the real Christmas Vacation was filmed in Colorado, out of nowhere sap, branches, and other parts of a tree starts hitting my windshield.   Definitely not what I would expect driving down the highway on a calm and clear day.

A little background:

Many scenes from the movie Christmas vacation were filmed around Breckenridge Colorado.  The tree cutting was filmed at the Breckenridge golf course near peak 8  and the sledding scene across the road was filmed in Frisco.  This made my encounter even more entertaining as I was outside of Silverthorne (not far from Breckenridge and Frisco) when we hit a traffic jam, suddenly there are pieces of a tree hitting my windshield.  I hang back and give plenty of space.

As I mosey along, all the sudden a log truck is all over me in a hurry to pass… I thought we were going to see a real-life version of the Griswold’s!  I had to get some gas so pull over and see the guy who has been in front holding up traffic.  I had to snap the pic above; two kids slowly get out of the back… they look like they are pretty cold.  My daughter is in the car with me and we are bent over laughing

The dad jumps out in a Patagonia Lumberjack shirt and starts shaking the back of the tree.  I can’t help but stare as I have no clue how they have tied the 20-foot tree onto the top of the Subaru and I’m not sure why they put it on backwards :< (the bottom of the tree should face the front so that the branches don’t get ripped off!).

Every time he shakes the tree a piercing scratching noise is emitted.  His wife/significant other gets out and starts chastising him about the size of the tree and his job tying it to the top of the car.  I can only imagine the conversation when/if they make it home with the tree when it doesn’t fit because their ceilings are not tall enough!

As I exit the gas station, I am convinced there is absolutely no way that tree was making it home!  As I get on the highway it was like a Christmas tree morg, with fresh cut trees all over the side of the highway including one that matched the picture I took! I can only imagine how happy the family is when they get home and notice that their twenty-foot tree is no longer on the roof!  I guess this guy is in good company, check out this video of the tree this guy had on his roof when he was ticketed https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wA796Zp7McM

It is good to know that in Colorado the “updated” version of the Griswold’s drives a Subaru, wears Patagonia lumberjack shirts, and is not very adept at tying as the tree likely will not make it to the final destination.

I hope each of you have a happy holiday season and take a few minutes to enjoy a good laugh.  I look forward to working with each of you in the upcoming year and a little more normalcy in 21

Regards,

Glen Weinberg
